Religious issues are sensitive, warns IGP

PETALING JAYA: Police will be submitting the investigation papers on a news report by a journalist, said to be able to disrupt public order during the election campaign in Sarawak, to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar also reminded all parties, including media practitioners, not to touch on sensitive issues, especially concerning religion.

“We have called the person and discussed with the AGC on what action to be taken against them… (The warning) is not only to journalists but also to all parties, as religious issues are sensitive.

“You’re are playing with fire. We will not allow it,” he told reporters after launching the Police Cooperative’s Auxiliary squad with ERM International Property Management at Oasis Damansara here today.

On Sunday (April 24), Sarawak police confirmed they had opened investigations against a Malaysiakini reporter on the news report titled “Vote BN to keep Muslim CM, S’wak Muslims told” which allegedly took quotes by Nangka Assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee during an event in Sibu out of context.

A total of six reports were filed in Sibu on the Malaysiakini news report.

In another development, police are still tracing two suspects claimed to have been policemen, found to be extorting money from a student in a video which went viral on social media recently.

Khalid said police were finding it hard to look for the suspects and the victim involved in the 51-second video clip, given that no police report had yet been filed.

“We have reviewed it (the video)… We have still not managed to trace (anyone) and I believe the suspects are not regular policemen. If it was done by regular police, we could have traced them quickly.

“However, I do not want to make any other accusation… Let us proceed with other bodies of uniformed personnel, including auxiliary police, school cadets or Suksis (Police Undergraduate Voluntary Corps)… and we will do a thorough investigation,” he said.
