‘Dr M soliciting DAP’s support for Mukhriz’s benefit’
PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad is soliciting support from the Chinese community, via the DAP, to topple the prime minister and pave the way for his son, Mukhriz, to climb the ranks.
In claiming so, Tengku Sarifuddin Tengku Ahmad, an aide to Najib Razak, added that the former premier had even lobbied for support from DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang, an Opposition politician Mahathir had previously detained.
Lim was detained under the Internal Security Act in 1987 following Ops Lalang, a crackdown carried out during Mahathir’s tenure as PM, supposedly to prevent racial riots.
“For years, Dr Mahathir has been pushing his son to become a top Umno leader, but he will never admit it.
“He should retire gracefully and allow his son to stand on his feet politically,” Tengku Sarifuddin said in his press statement today, alluding to Mukhriz.
He then took a swipe at Mukhriz after the latter alleged that 80% of Umno members were behind him, arguing that if that claim was indeed true, Mukhriz would have been elected as an Umno vice-president in the last party elections.
Mukhriz, Tengku Sarifuddin also pointed out, was removed as Kedah Menteri Besar, earlier this year due to a lack of support from party members.
In both instances, Tengku Sarifuddin said, Mahathir blamed Najib.
“Trying to unseat a serving prime minister just to benefit your son is a step too far for Umno members.
“Damaging the nation’s image for your son’s benefit by lying that RM42 billion is missing from 1MDB, is also a step too far for Umno,” he said alluding to the state investment arm.
Sarifuddin then challenged Mahathir to name a candidate to succeed both Najib and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
“Until he does, Mahathir cannot blame the people for believing that his failed attempt to unseat the prime minister is all about paving the way for his son.”
