IGP: Temple attack suspect had no link to terrorists
PETALING JAYA: Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar has ruled out that the suspect involved in demolishing statues at a temple in Ipoh was linked to any terrorist organisation.
He said the man acted on his own.
“Our investigations have shown that the suspect was mentally unstable. There are medical records relating to this.
“The police have no reason to conceal information regarding this matter. It was an isolated incident involving a person who is ill,” Khalid told Malaysiakini.
Khalid advised all quarters not to speculate on the incident after certain groups had cast doubts on the official version that the suspect, a medical doctor, was suffering from a psychological condition.
He warned that as the incident involved a place of worship, irresponsible statements could cause unrest and lead to undesirable consequences.
“We will not hesitate to act,” he said.
MIC Information chief VS Mogan had earlier urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation although the suspect had been sent to Hospital Bahagia for observation.
He noted that the man had specifically targeted a Hindu temple despite his mental impairment.
Penang Deputy Chief Minister II, P Ramasamy who also visited the temple, said police must tell the public the truth after carrying out a thorough check on the suspect’s background and motives.
