KUCHING: Police have named Batu Kawah, Bawang Assan, Pakan, Tasik Biru and Tanjung Batu as five of the 20 hot seats during this state election, and will be stationing extra personnel in those constituencies.

State Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department deputy head ACP Mohd Haris Daud said the police will pay more attention to the security and safety aspect in the identified hot seats, but will not neglect other less ‘hot’ seats during hustings.

“Our men are adequate and always on standby, not just in the hot seats but in each of the remaining seats. In any area where there are ceramah (talk) or gatherings, we will be there to monitor the situation,” he said during a press conference held at state police headquarters here yesterday.

Haris, who is the media spokesperson during this state election, added that a total of 29 ceramah permit applications were received on Monday, with 27 ceramah subsequently held.

“Of the 27 ceramah held yesterday (Monday), 20 were by Barisan Nasional while seven were by DAP. As of 11.30am today (yesterday), we have received eight applications, all of which are from BN and all scheduled to be held in Meradong,” he added.

Haris also did not rule out receiving more ceramah permit applications as the day progressed, saying the police will not reject any so long as the application fulfilled all the necessary requirements.

On the number of election-related police reports made thus far, he said there were no new reports made yesterday other than the seven received by police on nomination day.

“Of the reports made, we have opened five investigation papers for offences which took place in Kota Sentosa, Kapit, Bintangor, Bekenu and Sarikei. The remaining reports have been handed over to other relevant agencies for further action,” he said, adding there have been no arrests made in connection with the reports lodged.
