KUCHING: No independent candidates will be admitted into the Barisan Nasional (BN) even if they were elected in the coming election.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem stressed this at the chief minister meets the press session held at the Old State Legislative Assembly here last night.

“There are 35 independent candidates contesting in the 11th state election. The independent candidates are just funny people,” he said.

He categorized independent candidates as those who wanted to be bought, the frustrated ones, the sponsored ones and the genuine ones.

“I have been in politics for so long. I’ve noticed that there are the genuine independent candidates but they know they can’t do anything even if they win. So they hope to be taken into BN thereafter,” he explained.

Noting that such situation had happened in the past, Adenan however sternly reiterated that they would not be admitted into BN under his leadership.

“The typical example is the one who wanted to be bought, thinking they can make some money out of it. For instance, they pay RM8,000 deposit and expect to get 10 times in return. But in the end, (they are) not bought so they will leave the constituency and stay home,” he said.

“The frustrated ones are those who think they are the best but later not nominated so ‘merajuk’ (throw tantrums) and they go independent,” he added.

While the one sponsored by some big bosses, he elaborated and they would pocket 90 per cent of the sponsored money (to pay deposit) but would not campaign.

“That is like cheating,” he added, reminding that in the political history of Sarawak, no independent candidate has been voted in twice.

Meanwhile, on the squabble between DAP and PKR over seats, Adenan said it reflected their incompatibility and disunity among themselves.

“People see that they sleep together but having different dreams. I expect the situation will get worse so don’t be fooled by talk by (DAP supremo) Lim Kit Siang to deny two-thirds majority to BN.”

He said if the opposition just wanted to reduce BN’s majority, then why contest in so many seats in the May 7 state election – PKR 40 seats, DAP 31 seats, Amanah 13 seats, PAS 11 seats.

“This is a ploy so that people think there is no harm to vote for the opposition. If so (they are voted in), there is a grim possibility that Sarawak will be controlled by parties from Peninsular Malaysia.”
