Berawan community welcomes Gerawat as new Mulu rep

MIRI: The Berawan community in Baram warmly welcomes the newly-elected people’s representative for Mulu, Datuk Gerawat Gala and in this respect, its members strive to continue working hand-in-hand with the government.

Sarawak Berawan Association (SBA) president Catherine Awing said the Berawans, being the minority among all communities in Mulu, could not afford to be divided among themselves.

“We all must remain united for our own betterment. We are very grateful that Gerawat, as Barisan Nasional (BN) man, has been elected as the people’s representative for Mulu constituency.

“We talked about, thought of and prayed for Gerawat from nomination up to election day,” she said. As a representative of the Berawans, Catherine urged every member of the community to continue their support for the BN and the government.

“As a rural-based community, we have lots of needs in terms of development; this can only be realised by BN government,” she pointed out.

Catherine also thanked Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem for his willingness to de-gazette the Berawan’s Native Customary Rights (NCR) land in Sungai Melinau within Mulu National Park.

The decision for the NCR land to be given back to the Berawans was proof that the government led by Adenan was a caring and people-centric one.

“We believe that the chief minister has the same plans for the Berawans in Tutoh and in Tinjar,” she said.
