Good response to church’s charity sales
MIRI: The charity sales organised by the Parish of Good Shepherd Lutong earlier this month received encouraging response from members of the public here, with a crowd of more than 1,500 people patronising the event.
Also present to support the event was Senadin assemblyman Datuk Lee Kim Shin and Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting.
According to the church vicar Fr Donald Jute, the programme was an annual event of the church and he was amazed with the good support shown by members of the public towards the event.
“I would like to thank everyone who supported this event in one way or another, including Datuk Lee and Datuk Ting,” he said.
He added that the programme also received collaboration from the working committee of An Naim Mosque, which not only open their parking area for the church parishioners every Sundays, but also for the event on that day.
Fr Donald said proceeds from the charity sales which was headed by church member Moses Likong, would be channeled to the building fund of St Matthias Church, Tudan Desaras, which is under the management of Parish of Good Shepherd Lutong.
A total 35 stalls selling various types of food and beverages were set up at the event and there was also a free health screening booth set up by Miri Hospital.
Meanwhile, the St Matthias Church construction project at Lorong Perdana 5 of Tudan Desaras will involve a two-storey building to include a prayer hall on the first floor which can accomodate 500 people at any one time and a multipurpose hall on the ground floor.
The church will replace the old St Matthias Chapel which has become too small to accomodate the increasing number of parishioners in Tudan areas.
Costing about RM2 million, the project is still short of RM800,000. It is now 80 per cent completed and is expected to be fully completed by August this year.
Meanwhile, chairman of Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP) Pujut Adam Yii has contributed RM20,000 to the church’s building fund.
