Dr Mahathir wants Najib to turn up in court
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Najib Razak may have to make his first appearance in court soon.
Former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and two others, namely Khairuddin Abu Hassan and Anina Saadudin, filed an application today to have Najib testify over statements in his April 12 affidavit to strike out a suit by the former premier.
According to the trio’s lawyer, Haniff Khatri Abdulla, they want Najib to appear in court over contradictions, inconsistencies and lack of clarity in the contents of the affidavit.
These include a dispute arising from Najib’s use of the word “public officer”.
“Najib said that although he is the Prime Minister, Finance Minister and Umno President, he is not a public servant,” the notice said. “But at the same time the affidavit stated he was a public officer when the lawsuit was filed against him.”
Najib had also denied that former Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and former National and Rural Development Minister Shafie Apdal were dropped during the Cabinet reshuffle last year.
He further denied that four parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) members from the Barisan Nasional were given ministerial posts while they were in the midst of investigating the 1MDB scandal.
“These facts were well known to the people and have been in the public records,” the notice said.
The critics of Najib sued him over claims of abuse of power in office.
They want to compel him to return RM2.6 billion and another RM42 million to the government.
