Hundreds of poultry died in South Hulu Sungai



KANDANGAN, South Kalimantan: Hundreds of poultry died in several areas in South Hulu Sungai (HSS), South Kalimantan, that inflicted so much loss to farmers, AntaranewsKalsel reported.

Some poultry farmers in the village of Taniran Kubah, Sub-district of Angkinang said on Monday quite a lot of animals died every day. Even when totalized has reached hundreds, either duck or chicken.

Head of RT (neighborhood unit) IV Taniran Kubah Suryadi said that the incidence of livestock mortality, chickens and ducks, have been lasted for one month. Starting from a neighbor poultry died then infected the cage, up to some other poultry farmers.

“As a result, many farmers in our village who suffered losses, and are expecting these conditions can be overcome,” he said.

Suryadi said, farmers do not know the exact type of disease that caused many poultry died in the village.

Before dying, poultry were experiencing some symptoms, such as not eating, eyes blind as a closed membrane and died simultaneously in a single cage.

“The losses I have experienced in this month around Rp10 million, not to mention dozens of the same groups of farmers in our village whose poultry have disease like this,” he said.

The dead animals, he said, then thrown into a swamp area that is around their homes. Taniran Kubah is geographically low-lying and marshy, so the dead poultry were buried or burned.

People, particularly farmers, have not reported this incident to the authorities, but only submitted to the local village chief.

“In addition to reporting to the village, we also treat sick animals. And some were recovered, but the quality of eggs is not good as it broke,” he said.

Farmers also tried to sell the poultry, particularly those still in pain, but did not sell, as buyers worried about a sick duck.

Head of the Livestock and Fisheries Agency Saidi Noor said it would soon deploy a team to monitor conditions in the field, and the cause of death of this poultry.

“We will deploy the team to assure what happened, and why there is this epidemic disease,” he said.

Previous Department of Agriculture HSS, have to anticipate by spraying enclosure and vaccines for poultry.
