Daniel Buren brings colour to Le Bristol hotel garden in Paris
PARIS, June 12 — The prestigious Parisian hotel has invited the conceptual artist Daniel Buren to create a surprising pergola, installed in its garden until October 6, 2016.
Known since the 1960s for his works featuring 8.7cm-wide white and coloured stripes, installed both in private and public spaces, Daniel Buren has this year created a colourful pergola facing the colonnade of Le Bristol’s triple Michelin-starred restaurant, Epicure. Designed specifically for the French hotel’s garden, the structure revisits the typical use of the pergola by hanging five alphabetically arranged colours overhead instead of the usual climbing plants and flowers. As the sunlight moves and changes, the coloured panels cast light around the garden in different ways.
Le Bristol has teamed up with Galerie Kamel Mennour for this particular project, which brings Daniel Buren’s pergola to the hotel garden and an installation from Hicham Berrada to the bar, with the artist’s ethereal videos projected onto a giant mirrored screen.
Le Bristol Paris has been inviting contemporary art into its luxurious interior for three years. Between September 2014 and March 2015, Galleria Continua and Galerie Perrotin have curated Le Bar du Bristol’s video program, showcasing work by Daniel Buren, Ai Weiwei, Anish Kapoor, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Hans Op de Beeck, Jesper Just, Laurent Grasso, Gianni Motti, John Henderson and JR.
Galerie Kamel Mennour was founded in 1999 and represents world-renowned artists such as Daniel Buren, Anish Kapoor and Huang Yong Ping, whose work is currently on show in the French capital’s Grand Palais, as part of its 2016 Monumenta exhibition.
Daniel Buren caused a stir in 1986 when his “Deux Plateaux” — more commonly known as the “Colonnes de Buren” — was installed in the inner courtyard of the Palais Royal in Paris.
Hicham Berrada, also represented by Galerie Kamel Mennour, is a young artist who trained at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He enjoyed a residency at the Villa Medici in 2014 after his first monographic exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris in 2013.
“Le Bristol x Kamel Mennour” runs until October 6, 2016, at Le Bristol Paris.
