Long wait for airbags irks car owners
PETALING JAYA, Aug 22 — Car owners are puzzled as to how long more they should wait to have airbags replaced following the global recall of Toyota, Nissan and Honda models.
Many claim they have yet to get the Takata airbag inflators replaced despite having contacted their respective distributors and service centres.
Kelvin Mah Choo Seng, who owns a Honda Jazz purchased in 2011, said he had been waiting for two months for the distributor to finalise an appointment.
“There seems to be no urgency to deal with customer’s complaints despite repeated calls,” the 27-year-old said.
“I only knew about the recall from media reports and an automotive website in June.”
Mah said anything could go wrong while customers were waiting to replace their airbags.
Telecommunications manager Maryanne Sarah Emmanual, who drives a 2004 Nissan Teana, said she received a letter from Nissan three months ago to replace the Takata airbags.
“As soon as I got the letter, I called the dealer to make an appointment but they kept postponing it because they were out of parts for the driver’s side airbag,” she said.
“I have made six appointments and I am still waiting for the airbags to be replaced.
“There seems to be a breakdown in communications between service centres and the headquarters over supply.”
Mohd Mansor Marzaki Ali, who owns a 2009 Toyota Camry, said he had to wait for almost a month before he received replacement parts for the airbags.
“I went to UMW’s service centre in June for the parts to be replaced but they were only available at the end of the month because of the waiting list,” he said.
Mansor, 35, who had been using various Toyota cars since he was in college, said he was disappointed he had to wait for so long before the parts were restocked.
Last week, Honda (M) Sdn Bhd announced a 100 per cent parts availability for the driver front airbag inflator.
It also said Honda Malaysia had replaced 45 per cent of the the recalled airbag inflators, totallingh about 175,000 units.
For the front passenger airbag inflators, Honda Malaysia said it was facing parts shortage and was unable to secure 100 per cent stock availability because of a global shortage of parts.
In June, a woman driver died when shrapnel pierced her chest after her airbag was activated following a minor collision in Kota Damansara.
