LONDON — US President Donald Trump has branded London Mayor Sadiq Khan “pathetic” over his response to the London Bridge terror attack.

A spokesperson for Khan accused Trump on Sunday of being “ill-informed” and taking his comments “out of context” after Trump tweeted at the weekend that the London mayor had told Londoners “not to be alarmed” by the attack.

The comments were in response to a statement by Khan in which he had told Londoners not to be alarmed by the increased police presence on the streets of London, after the attack which left seven people dead and many more injured.

However, Trump removed this context, leading many of his followers to assume that Khan had suggested that the attack was not worth being alarmed about.

Responding again today, Trump accused Khan of making a “pathetic excuse” for his comments.

“Pathetic excuse by London Mayor Sadiq Khan who had to think fast on his “no reason to be alarmed” statement. MSM is working hard to sell it!” he tweeted.

A spokesperson for Khan told Business Insider today: “Nothing has changed since yesterday. The Mayor is focused on dealing with Saturday’s horrific and cowardly attack and working with the police, the emergency services and the Government to keep London safe.”

Trump’s comments are in direct contradiction to those made by the US ambassador to the UK today.

“I commend the strong leadership of the @MayorofLondon as he leads the city forward after this heinous attack,” acting ambassador Lewis Lukens tweeted.

British Prime Minister Theresa May also defended Khan today. Speaking at a press conference in central London, May said that Khan was “doing a very good job” but declined repeated requests from journalists to openly criticise Trump.

Khan, who is a member of the opposition Labour party,  is a popular figure in London, with recent polls suggesting he has a high approval rating even among voters for the governing Conservative party.
