KUALA LUMPUR: Malay rights group Perkasa today issued a letter of demand to the health ministry over its move to relax the rules on passing Bahasa Melayu (BM) at the SPM level for medical housemen.
Its president, Ibrahim Ali, said this was necessary to ensure that Putrajaya would not go ahead with the decision.
He said Perkasa would give the ministry seven days to rescind the decision or risk being hauled to court for implementing a policy which he said went against the Federal Constitution.
“We have made our stand very clear. We will not hesitate to take anyone to court on issues revolving around Article 153 and the violation of the constitution,” he said, referring to the provision that touches on Bumiputera rights.
On July 2, the health ministry announced the relaxation of the national language “pass” requirement for contract medical workers, that is medical housemen.
The department said this was to allow medical graduates who did not have an SPM-level BM pass to serve and get full registration certificates as medical officers.
The Public Service Department (PSD) said if the candidates wanted to apply for permanent posts, then SPM-level BM is required.
The reaction to the decision has been mixed, with the Malaysia Medical Association (MMA) supporting it and Pakatan Harapan saying all housemen should be fluent in BM.
Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi meanwhile said he would summon Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Joseph Entulu Belaun and Health Minister Dr S Subramaniam to give an explanation to the cabinet.
Ibrahim also took a swipe at Subramaniam, whom he claimed did not inform the cabinet of the decision prior to making the announcement.
“When the DPM said he will be summoning the ministers to explain to the cabinet, does that mean no consultation took place before the announcement was made?” -FMT
