Anwar yet to receive notice to attend RCI, says lawyer

PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has yet to receive a formal notice to attend the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into Bank Negara’s foreign exchange (forex) losses.

Anwar's lawyer R Sivarasa confirmed this, stating that he himself found out that the first hearing is starting tomorrow.

"(It is) very short notice. You issue before the weekend and say 'I'm starting over the weekend'," said Sivarasa (photo) to reporters at the Kuala Lumpur High Court today when told that the RCI had announced that the first hearing will commence tomorrow.

Anwar, earlier, reaffirmed his readiness to give his full cooperation to the RCI. His affirmation came as the RCI is set to hold its first hearing at the Court of Appeal in Putrajaya tomorrow.

"I have said that I'm prepared to participate.

"I will give my facts based on my personal knowledge as minister of finance,(then)," he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur High Court today.

He, however, reiterated against being used as a "political tool" in the matter.

Following the announcement of the composition of the RCI last month, Anwar had promised to give his full cooperation to the RCI.

The RCI would determine the veracity of the allegations surrounding the forex losses incurred by Bank Negara and its implications on the national economy, among others.

It has been given a three-month time frame to complete its task and submit a report to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The six-member team is headed by the former chief secretary to the government, Mohd Sidek Hassan.

The forex scandal occurred during the 1980s when Dr Mahathir Mohamad was prime minister, prompting certain quarters to accuse Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak of attempting to exact political revenge against his nemesis. -Mkini
