Dr M not injured and wants struggle to continue, says PPBM Youth
PPBM Youth chief says there appears to systematic sabotage to ruin the ‘Nothing to Hide 2.0’ forum using students and to injure the PH chairman.
SHAH ALAM: Pakatan Harapan chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad was not injured in the commotion that broke out during the Nothing to Hide 2.0 forum today.
PPBM Youth exco member Mohd Ashraf Mustaqim said he was sure of this as he was the last person to shake the former prime minister’s hands before the latter left the venue.
“I apologised to Tun, but he said it’s okay. ‘This is a struggle for our country,’ he told me,” Ashraf told a press conference here.
PPBM Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman confirmed this.
He said the commotion seemed like a systematic plan to sabotage the forum, which ended in chaos when fiery projectiles with chemical odour were hurled as Mahathir was fielding a question from the audience.
He said two flares were found and the perpetrators, understood to be students, were seen wearing the youth wing’s T-shirt, despite not being PPBM members.
“We found two flares. This was clearly planned. The police’s initial investigation found that although they were wearing the Armada (PPBM Youth) T-shirt, they’re not from the wing,” he said after the event was forced to end abruptly.
“While they were running, they took off the Armada T-shirt. We were also informed they were given the T-shirts for free.
“They were students used for sabotage. We hope the police will investigate this.
“We will lodge a police report on this, because we have the evidence – T-shirts, shoes, videos and so on.”
It is understood that three students from a private college in Shah Alam, aged 17 to 19, were detained.
Syed Saddiq added that one person was injured from a chair thrown at him.
He also said the perpetrators caught had made confessions that were recorded on video.
He however said the party did not want to accuse anyone as the matter was still under investigation.
Lawyer Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla, who was present, said a few people were arrested to assist in investigations.
He said they were handed to the police immediately after being taken away by the party members.
Syed Saddiq also said the party was disappointed because the members had not called for gangsterism during the forum.
He said despite the behaviour of such “irresponsible” people, they will continue holding forums and dialogues.
“We have nothing to hide. If Tun (Mahathir) can, we will never stop.”
The incident at the Dewan Raja Muda Musa occurred after a participant had questioned Mahathir on the 1985 Memali incident, which saw 14 villagers and four policemen being killed in a confrontation between police and an Islamic cult in Kedah when Mahathir was prime minister.
“Why, Tun? They were Malaysians. They were Malays, villagers. They were not Jews or Zionists,” the participant was heard saying.
As Mahathir, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairman, replied, flares were thrown and fighting broke out. One person, suspected to be the one who hurled the projectile, was taken away into a room.
Syed Saddiq said despite the controversial questions posed, Mahathir, 92, had answered calmly.
“For one and a half hours, no problem arose,” he said.
“But then there was an element of systematic sabotage. To sabotage the programme and injure Mahathir.
“After the question about Memali, a shoe and a chair were thrown Mahathir’s way.
“Then there was a commotion, heading towards Mahathir’s direction,” he added.
The forum was organised by PPBM Youth for Mahathir to openly respond to criticisms made against him. Prime Minister Najib Razak, who was also invited to debate Mahathir and field questions, did not show up. - FMT
