Shamsher Singh Thind: Sorry no cure, Guan Eng!

“I hereby call upon Wan Azizah, the MP for Permatang Pauh, and Lim Guan Eng, the “Assistant MP” for Permatang Pauh, to step down with immediate effect for failing in their duties. Even the hardworking Penanti Assemblywoman, Dr Norlela, was ignored by them”
SHAMSHER SINGH THIND
In the run up to the infamous Permatang Pauh by-election, held on the 7th of May 2015, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng assured Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail that he would help take care of her constituents should she trump her competition in Permatang Pauh. Back in Selangor, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Azmin Ali offered similar assistance to the PKR president by pledging to look after her constituents in Kajang.
Question is, what happened to all that assistance?
Despite having the support of two heads of states, the PKR president failed miserably in highlighting the plight of her constituents and that of reps within her constituency. This became evident in November 2015 when Penanti assemblywoman Dr Norlela Ariffin broke down in tears owing to the state government’s repeated failure in addressing her queries.
Was Guan Eng not aware that Norlela was only attempting to protect her constituents, who were suffering due to toxic fume inhalation? Did he not know that Norlela was representing a state seat that was part of the larger Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency which the Chief Minister promised to protect?
It appears that both Guan Eng and Wan Azizah were not the least bit concerned that the residents of Kampung Sungai Lembu were at risk of developing cancer due to the inhalation of toxic fumes and ash emanating from an illegal carbon filter-processing factory that adopted an open burning system.
What’s worse, the state administration issued a directive, telling Majlis Perbandaran Seberang Perai (MPSP) not to intervene in the issue. Now, whether this was an abuse of power or not is not my concern. All l want to know is this – why did the state government, which claims to champion a greener, cleaner and safer Penang, allow this to happen for so long?
Even if the matter is outside state government’s or MPSP’s jurisdiction, and even if it comes within the purview of the DOE, the Pakatan Harapan led state government should still have held protests outside the factory the same way they did in Lynas. Why was this not done?
Did the state government even bother to send a protest letter to the factory or the DOE? No. But ironically, letters were sent to MPSP instead, telling councillors to stay away from an issue that clearly put residents around the Kampung Sungai Lembu area at risk. Can you believe this?
Given the above, I hereby call upon Wan Azizah, the MP for Permatang Pauh, and Lim Guan Eng, the “Assistant MP” for Permatang Pauh, to step down with immediate effect for failing in their duties. Even the hardworking Penanti Assemblywoman, Dr Norlela, was ignored by them.
Sorry no cure, Lim Guan Eng.
