AMANAH YOUTH LEADS THE CHARGE WITH NATIONWIDE FUEL HIKE PROTEST ON SEPT 11
Amanah Youth has called for a nationwide protest next week against the rise in fuel prices, following 10 straight weeks of price hikes.
Vice-chief Shazni Munir Mohd Ithnin said the series of fuel price hikes further burdened Malaysians, who are already facing a squeeze due to the goods and services tax (GST).
“This has affected the peoples’ disposable income.
“Hence we should fight by protesting the hike in petrol prices, which will also result in a domino effect of prices of other essential goods to increase,” he said in a statement.
Other NGOs will reportedly join Amanah Youth in its protest, which is scheduled to be held across the country on Sept 11. The exact time and location of the protests are yet to be announced.
“We hope people who are concerned with the rise in petrol prices will come together to pressure the government to be responsible and bring back (fuel) subsidies,” Shazni said.
The call to action was issued after the government announced the four sen hike in petrol prices (to RM2.20 per litre for RON95 and RM2.48 for RON97), and one sen hike for diesel (RM2.05).
Petrol prices have climbed steadily since July 27, except for the week of Aug 17 to 24, where prices remained unchanged.
The weekly fuel price system was implemented in March this year, and is determined by global oil price, based on the Mean of Platts Singapore (MOPS) and the ringgit’s strength against the US dollar.
