MACC chief should go to US with Najib, says Kit Siang

MACC chief commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad should accompany Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to Washington to meet US investigators probing missing funds related to 1MDB, said DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang today. 

Then, Dzulkifli can report to Malaysians the "basis and the status" of the investigations carried out by the US Department of Justice (DOJ), Lim said in a statement. 

Accepting US President Donald Trump's invitation to the White House next Tuesday would put Najib in an inferior position, akin to a supplicant, after being branded a "kleptocrat and MO1" by the DOJ, said the Gelang Patah MP. 

However, if the prime minister insists on going, he should be accompanied by Dzulkifli, who could meet with Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) chief to get updates on the US litigation into the 1MDB scandal, he added. 

"Dzulkifli should find out from his counterparts in the FBI why DOJ/FBI investigators had been able to assemble such a mountain of evidence about the international 1MDB," a feat not achieved by local investigators on the same scandal, said Lim, in reference to the over 251 pages of evidence gathered by the two agencies on the matter. 

"There are many Malaysians who say that the White House meeting means that Trump will tell the DOJ to call off the investigation into 1MDB and the corruption that surrounds it."

Lim noted, however, that the idea had been dismissed by former US ambassador to Malaysia, John Mallot.

Trump's invitation to Najib is in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of bilateral ties between Malaysia and US.

Both leaders are expected to discuss mutually beneficial cooperation on various issues, including national security, the global fight against terrorism and extremism. -Mkini
