CHARGE NAJIB, JHO LOW & RIZA AZIZ FOR STEALING & MONEY-LAUNDERING – MALAYSIA’S OPPOSITION URGES DOJ, OTHER AUTHORITIES ON EVE OF WHITE HOUSE VISIT

PAKATAN Harapan leaders today called for Najib Razak to be charged over scandals related to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

The call was among other demands unveiled ahead of the prime minister’s White House visit tomorrow. They also want his step-son, Riza Aziz ,and associate Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, to be prosecuted as well.

Najib is visiting the United States at the invitation of President Donald Trump.

They did not specify which agency should file indictments, but authorities in several countries, including the US Singapore, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Luxemburg and the Seychelles, are investigating 1MDB’s complex web of international transactions.

The US Department of Justice had filed civil suits to seize assets bought with money allegedly diverted from 1MDB. These suits have been halted to facilitate a criminal investigation.

They also want a clean government, corruption-free candidates and for ill-gotten gains obtained through corruption and kleptocracy to be used to build schools and hospitals.

“The people must rise to reclaim their rights and their money,” said a joint statement signed by Amanah president Mohamed Sabu, PKR MP Johari Abdul, DAP lawmaker Tony Pua, Bersatu Youth (Armada) chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, PKR Youth chief Nik Nazri Nik Ahmad, Amanah Youth and DAP Socialist Youth.

The leaders said these demands would be made at the Love Malaysia, End Kleptocracy rally, which PH is holding at Padang Timur Petaling Jaya on October 14.

Najib is scheduled to meet Trump tomorrow, in a visit that has been criticised by the opposition and civil society here. They have accused the Malaysian leader of using the visit to whitewash the alleged scandals against him and scrutiny by the DoJ.

To date no one has been prosecuted over 1MDB’s dealings, except for three Singaporean bankers formerly with BSI in separate cases for money laundering, document forgery and failure to disclose suspicious transactions involving 1MDB and Low.

The PH leaders said the people must not be “fooled” by Putrajaya’s moves to engage the US and China, adding that it was “ironic” that the government was selling strategic national assets, pieces of land and giving major port projects to China.

“Najib’s government has two problems. First, the image that he is corrupt, and secondly the people’s crisis of confidence.

“It is very ironic that Najib’s administration which has always played on nationalist sentiments and on being against the interference of foreign powers, is now depending on the US and China to save him.”
