PAS leader: Amanat Hadi relevant when Umno was 'anti-Islam' under Dr M

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's controversial amanat (mandate) in 1981 was relevant at the time when Umno was under the leadership of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, according to a PAS leader.
Dewan Ulama chief Mahfodz Mohamed said Umno is no longer the same and therefore PAS had adopted a different approach.
"Amanat Hadi was issued at the appropriate time because Umno under Mahathir's leadership then was terrible, anti-Islam.
"Our approach towards Umno is now different because the party is no longer like the Umno under Mahathir. When we explain things today, Alhamdulillah, some of it is accepted.
"Back then, it was always Islam which was opposed," he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.
Critics have accused Hadi and PAS of working with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to ensure Umno is victorious in the coming general election.
PAS, however, has denied this, arguing that its cooperation with Umno is on matters pertaining to Islam and Malay unity.
Memali incident
Mahfodz was commenting on Mahathir accusing the muftis of not reprimanding Hadi's amanat. The former premier has blamed the amanat for the Memali incident in 1985.
The PAS leader reiterated his support for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to be set up to uncover the truth behind the Memali incident, which claimed 18 lives.
"This is why PAS agreed when there were those who suggested that an RCI be formed.
"Let an independent commission carry out a thorough investigation to determine who is responsible for (the Memali incident)," he added.
During a speech on Dec 30, Mahathir questioned the mufti silence on the amanat, which he claimed branded those who did not join PAS as infidels.
"Their silence speaks a thousand words, as though they agree with PAS' view.
"So if they agree with PAS' opinion, (but) they did not join PAS, then the muftis are also kafir (infidels), and those they advise are also kafir," he added.
The mufti are also the advisors to the Malay rulers in their respective states.
Hadi, in his amanat, does not explicitly state that those who do not join PAS are infidels.
However, he said Muslims who do not adopt Islam as a complete way of life, including politics, were infidels.
Yesterday, Perak mufti Harussani Zakaria said it was unfair to accuse the mufti of not doing anything to prevent the Memali incident as the then government under Mahathir rarely consulted Islamic scholars on most issues. - Mkini
