Manhattan ‘Drybar’ Employee Fired for Writing ‘Chinky Eyes’ on Customer’s Receipt

A hair salon in Manhattan landed in hot water after one of its customers was handed a receipt with the words “chinky eyes” written on it.

Briana Tae, who attends New York University’s Nursing School, visited the Murray Hill Drybar at around 6 p.m. on Monday to get her hair done for her pinning ceremony the next day, according to her post on Facebook.

But the racist slur on her receipt put a damper on her special day.

“I look over and see this,” Tae wrote. “Client: Briana, Description: Chinky eyes.”

The Astoria resident said she was so appalled that she confronted an employee at the front desk, which didn’t exactly help matters.

Tae wrote that the staff member “could not understand why it was an issue and why it was highly inappropriate to write such a description.”

The female employee tried to make her feel better by telling Tae that she has “chinky” eyes as well.

The post has gained more than 500 reactions and has been shared 130 times as of this writing, with some praising Tae for calling Drybar out and others promising never to step foot in the establishment ever again.

 

Tae wrote that she was disgusted by the situation, which occurred the night before celebrating her accomplishments at NYU.

“All of my hard work and successes simply came down to a girl with ‘chinky eyes,’” she said, adding, “Since when is it okay to describe your paying customers as something so racist?”

In response, Drybar replied to Tae’s post, writing, “This is very serious to us.” The employee in question has allegedly been let go and no longer works at the salon.

“In response to this matter, Drybar is reviewing its training programs around diversity and inclusion so that this does not happen again. We are truly sorry,” the Drybar team said.
