Ramasamy censures Syed Saddiq over 'insult' to Dr M

Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy has trained his guns on Bersatu Youth leader Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman over the wing's demand that P Waythamoorthy is removed as a minister.

The DAP leader claimed the wing insulted Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and questioned the latter's wisdom in appointing members of his cabinet.

"Waythamoorty might not be part of the Pakatan Harapan coalition but he was nonetheless appointed to be a minister on account of his contributions to the Indian community. It was the decision of none other than the prime minister.

"Isn't it an insult to Mahathir himself for asking Wathyamoorthy's resignation when it was he who appointed him? In other words, Bersatu Youth is questioning the decision and wisdom of its chairperson who is none other than Mahathir.

"It would not take long for someone to question Syed Saddiq and whether he acted in accordance with the role expected of a federal minister," he added in a statement this morning.

Yesterday, a Bersatu Youth delegation submitted a memorandum to Mahathir asking for Waythamoorthy to be removed from his position as minister in the Prime Minister's Department, whose portfolio concerns unity and social well-being.

Ramasamy questioned if it was appropriate for Syed Saddiq, who is also the youth and sports minister, to be part of this delegation.

The delegation claimed that Waythamoorthy had failed to contain the tension with regard to the Nov 27 riot outside the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Subang Jaya.

However, Ramasamy said calling for Waythamoorthy's resignation had "gone beyond normalcy" as race and religion were given top priority instead of the facts surrounding the temple incident.

"I don't see any difference between some of the youth wings of Harapan, Umno and PAS.

"Thus, if some sections of Harapan are going to return to primordial sentiments in evaluating and analysing issues, then we have to say goodbye to the promises made by the coalition in taking Malaysia along the path of good governance and democracy," he added.

Meanwhile, Ramasamy also commented on Bersatu recruiting Umno leaders and noted the concern that the party might transform into Umno 2.0.

"Eventually, forget about ideals and hopes, but political expediency is going to turn Berstau into another Umno, albeit with the different name.

"The use of race and religion for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with the progress of the nation might be soon become the nightmare of Malaysians," he added. - Mkini
