Indonesian Dad Shielded Son From Bullets During Christchurch Massacre, Both Survived
A two-year-old boy survived the horrific New Zealand mosque shooting last Friday after his father shielded him from the gunfire.
The Indonesian father, Zulfirman Syah sustained multiple bullet wounds from saving his son, Averroes. After undergoing extensive surgery, Syah is now recovering in the hospital.
Due to his father’s sacrifice, the toddler only sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and backside, according to a Facebook post from his mom.
Three days later, she posted an update:
“While the road to recovery will be long, his condition has only improved since he arrived at the hospital yesterday. This afternoon he had a visit from the Indonesian ambassador, which lifted his spirits,” wrote Alta Marie.
She noted that her son “has been cheerful while keeping the staff on the children’s ward entertained with his talkative and energetic nature.”
A GoFundMe page was set up by a family friend to help offset the cost of hospital bills for the father and son.
Syah and his son are among the dozens injured by a 28-year-old Australian white supremacist who opened fire at two mosques in Christchurch.
The massacre, considered as New Zealand’s deadliest shooting in modern history, resulted in the death of at least 50 people.
