MCA: PAS encouraging paedophilia

PETALING JAYA: PAS’ call to allow child marriages to put a stop to premarital sex among teenagers encourages paedophilia, MCA Central Committee Member Ti Lian Ker said today.

Ti stressed that the call by PAS Pasir Putih MP Nik Mazian Nik Mohamad, who recently claimed that child marriages would allow lustful teenagers to satisfy their sexual cravings, only served to remind the public of PAS’ narrow-mindedness and even their lust for underage wives.

“It is clear that Nik Mazian has failed to consider the possibility of the ‘fear factor’ involved in these cases. A young victim might be too intimidated to say ‘no’ to an older figure.

“Regardless of whether the intercourse was consensual or not, Nik Mazian must also remember that as minors, they are considered too young to comprehend what they are doing or to even understand the consequences of their actions.

“This is why minors must be protected and why child marriages must be banned,” Ti said in a statement today.

He added that sex education can raise awareness and as a result curb the rise in premarital sex.

“We should focus on educating minors about the reproductive system, as well as sexual health.

“It is not right for PAS to suggest legalising the illegal as this will not make the problem disappear and only sweeps the problem under the carpet.”

DAP lawmaker Charles Santiago echoed Ti’s sentiment, saying that there is a need for sex education.

“There are no studies that show child marriages will end premarital sex. They (PAS) have nothing to justify this.

“They probably said this based on religious beliefs. What we need is education and that’s what we should be establishing,” Charles told FMT.

Yesterday, Nik Mazian was quoted in news reports as saying that allowing child marriages would put a stop to “rampant premarital sex” among teenagers.

He said that prohibiting child marriages, on the other hand, would lead to a rise in the number of teenagers having casual sex.
