Najib must clear the air on Perda land sale
GEORGE TOWN: Prime Minister Najib Razak must step in to explain why a federal agency in Nibong Tebal last year agreed to sell off land at a very cheap rate, a Penang executive councillor said.
Dr Afif Bahardin said since the agency was under the auspices of the Federal Government, Najib should respond to accusations of wrongdoing that have been hurled at the Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda).
“I feel there is criminal breach of trust in the land transaction and the PM should respond to this immediately.
“Nevertheless, I am leaving this matter to be investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC),” he said in a press conference today.
Dr Afif later led a delegation of Penang Pakatan Harapan leaders to the MACC office to formally lodge a report on the land sale.
Yesterday, the Penang state executive council unanimously decided to lodge a report with the MACC out of public interest.
This came after a revelation by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng that Perda sold a 3.4ha plot of land to SYT Prestige Sdn Bhd, a private developer, for only RM1.42 million last year despite an Inland Revenue Board land valuation giving it a RM16.6 million price tag.
The land was originally acquired by the government in 1986 at RM1.7 million to build affordable homes.
In defending the land sale, Perda chairman Shabudin Yahaya said the land was sold cheap because of various issues, including soil erosion.
Shabudin also said a cost benefit analysis showed it was no longer worthy pursuing the affordable homes project on the site as Perda would incur losses of up to RM10 million if it did, a claim rubbished by Lim who said the land could have easily been restored for RM5 million or less.
