Opposition MP says Pandikar’s salary should be cut by 35%

Lim-lip-engKUALA LUMPUR: After threatening to resign last year if no Parliamentary reforms were made this year, Pandikar Amin Mulia should now agree to having his salary slashed by 35% since only three of four Parliamentary reforms were accepted by the Cabinet.

This was the opinion of Lim Lip Eng (DAP-Segambut) who said that since the Dewan Rakyat Speaker made it clear last year that he wanted parliamentary reforms, he should show that he was serious about it.

Last year Pandikar tendered his resignation to Prime Minister Najib Razak and only agreed to retract it after he was promised that Parliamentary reforms would take place.

However according to Lim, one of the four proposals sent to the Cabinet in an effort to reform Parliament had been rejected.

“Both the Barisan Nasional (BN) and Opposition MPs have agreed on four parliamentary reforms but only three were accepted.

“Number one, the formation of a second chamber (or) a mini Parliament; second, an extra 30 minutes for ministers to reply to our questions; and third to shorten the time for one to submit questions from 14 days to 10 days.

“But the most important proposal was rejected by the Cabinet which was on the Select Committee,” Lim said.

“To me this is the most important (because) before a bill is tabled in Parliament, there will be a Select Committee consisting of BN and Opposition (MPs) who will discuss and scrutinise the bill before it can be tabled,” he told reporters at the Dewan Rakyat lobby today.

Thus, Lim said Pandikar should show Najib that he “meant business” by asking for his salary to be cut by 35% if he chose not to resign as he pledged last year.

“To me he (Pandikar) is just a ‘cari makan’ Speaker. Kiss Najib’s hand and say ‘thank you’. He said he will resign if no reforms (were made) at the first session this year.

“If he refuses to resign at least cut his salary by 35%. Not to humiliate him but to (send) a message to Najib that he means business, that he wants the fourth proposal by BN and Opposition MPs to be accepted.”
