Nazri: People aware of Dr M’s past, don’t care about him
PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s continuous attacks on Prime Minister Najib Razak’s administration will only affect his dignity instead of Umno’s or Malaysia’s, Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said.
In an exclusive interview with Sinar Harian, the Umno Supreme Council member said Malays could not accept that a political stalwart like Mahathir would join forces with the Opposition to topple a democratically-elected government.
The former premier, Nazri pointed out, had once proclaimed he could not be ousted undemocratically.
Yet Mahathir, he argued, was now going against the very principles he once espoused.
The tourism and culture minister said this was why Mahathir’s action would have no impact on the country’s image, despite the latter’s influence in West Asia.
“People are aware of what he did then and what he is doing now. He is doing exactly the opposite of what he used to do during his time (as the prime minister).
“People don’t really care. They see him as a vengeful person,” the Malay daily quoted him as saying.
Mahathir was the nation’s prime minister from 1981 to 2003.
Nazri also said there was no reason to stop Mahathir from taking to the streets.
In fact, the Padang Renggas MP said, the elderly statesman should be encouraged to do so as the more Mahathir took part in demonstrations, the more it would reveal the wrongs committed by him in the past.
Nazri said it would also boost the country’s image.
“If we allowed a former premier to take part in demonstrations and we don’t take any action against him, then we will be seen as a country that practices democracy.”
