Guan Eng happy with oil spill clean-up ops
GEORGE TOWN: The oil spill clean-up in the North Channel is satisfactory, says Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng following a fuel oil contamination in the waterways on Friday.
He said operations to further clean up the sea had been called off as remnants of the oil spill had been cleared by authorities.
“I am very satisfied with the efforts and swift action by all authorities involved.
“I would like to thank the Marine Department and Department of Environment,” Lim said when met by reporters at Fort Cornwallis.
A oil tanker was alleged to have discharged fuel oil into the sea while berthing at the Prai Bulk Cargo Terminal (PBCT) on Friday.
The oil spill spread some 77 sq km, with investigators blaming slow and stuttered clean-up operations to blame.
Penang Port Sdn Bhd said it was too early to say if the vessel had discharged fuel into the waters as investigations were ongoing.
Penang Port also assured that all standard operating procedures were followed in the incident.
