More CCTV cameras in KL than in Australia
KUALA LUMPUR: There will not be an increase of closed-circuit televisions (CCTV) cameras in Kuala Lumpur even though snatch thefts continue to occur.
Kuala Lumpur Mayor Mhd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz said there were already too many CCTV cameras in the city, exceeding the number available in Australia.
“There are already a lot of CCTV cameras, we will not add any more. There are more than 1,000, more than there are in Australia,” he told reporters at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur and Prasarana Malaysia Berhad here today.
Amin said DBKL was now more focused on efforts to improve the existing infrastructure around Kuala Lumpur to curb snatch thefts.
“We are putting up street lights, lighting up dark places. We put up mirrors and construct dividers. In this we are cooperating with the police and the department of urban planning.
“DBKL will improve the infrastructure at all crime hot spots,” he said.
He said so far there were more than 1,000 CCTV cameras installed with 300 of them being connected directly to the police.
Previously, the New Straits Times reported that during the first two months of this year, a total of 194 cases of thefts occurred in Kuala Lumpur. The number is more than three times for the same period last year where only 63 cases occurred.
In 2014, Kuala Lumpur recorded 593 cases, while Selangor recorded 845 cases.
Meanwhile, the number of cases increased last year from 604 cases to 950 cases.
