Mahfuz: PAS should accept Azmin’s offer to join Pakatan
The Pokok Sena lawmaker said the PKR deputy president’s appeal was made after the Opposition lost heavily in the Sarawak election, partly due to the infighting among two of the Pakatan partners.
DAP and PKR were involved in a spat after the two allies decided to vie for six state seats in the recently concluded state polls.
“The Opposition should come together and set aside their egos to form a viable and more convincing pact to win over the ‘rakyat’, ” he said in a statement.
Mahfuz, who is the former PAS information chief, also hopes that his party would accept Azmin’s offer with open arms for the country and the people’s sake.
Azmin had yesterday called for opposition parties to come together again in an electoral alliance to fight the next general election, which is due by July 2018, “as a team”.
He said this after concluding that the Sarawak election results revealed that the people rejected the squabbling among the opposition parties.
While Mahfuz wants PAS to take up Azmin’s offer, the Islamist party’s research centre has instead invited PKR to join the third political bloc, which currently consists of PAS and Ikatan.
The centre’s operations director, Mohd Zuhdi Marzuki believes that a coalition comprising PAS, PKR and other parties like Ikatan had the potential of making a huge impact, including wresting Putrajaya from Barisan Nasional in GE14.
PKR, he added, should not delay in making a decision whether to join the third force or remain with Pakatan, especially with two potential by-elections just a couple of months away following the death of Federal lawmakers, Sungai Besar MP Noriah Kasnon and Kuala Kangsar MP Wan Mohammad Khairil Anuar Wan Ahmad, in a helicopter crash in Sarawak on Thursday.
