Malaysian tycoon to set up football academy in Italy
PETALING JAYA: Malaysian businessman Noordin Ahmad, who recently made international headlines after purchasing a huge stake in Italian football club Bari FC, is planning to set-up a football academy, The New Straits Times reported today.
The FC Bari Football Academy with be set up with facilities in Bari and Malaysia to train youths and prepare them for a career in international football leagues. It would also be complete with academic and non-academic curriculum.
According to Noordin, the academy would also cover the key aspects of the sport, such as team management, physical and mental preparation of players, as well as the legal and financial elements of the game.
“The focus is to expose Malaysian and Bari youths to the European league.
“To kickstart the programme, I want to rope in at least three young Malaysians to attend the academy each year in order for them to gain knowledge and exposure in the international football scene,” he said.
Noordin said he felt that Malaysian talents had a better chance for exposure in Serie B of the Italian league. He also plans to arrange for the trading of Malaysian players with other teams in the European league.
“I hope to get support from Malaysian coaches and parents to make this a reality. It is important to identify the talents for this programme now, and I need all the help I can get for this.
“I may be able to provide the best facilities and the funds, as well as give an opportunity for our youth to realise their potential,” he said, urging parents, coaches and teachers who were aware of their students’ talent in football to contact him.
He added announcements about the academy and how potentially-talented players can secure a place there will be made in the future.
Noordin said he hopes his efforts will eventually see Malaysia qualify for the 2022 World Cup to be held in Qatar.
