Political funding plan to be ready in August

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Consultative Committee on Political Funding (JKNMPP) is expected to present a plan on political funding to the Government by end of August.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Paul Low told the Dewan Rakyat today that a consultation session would be held with political parties before the plan was presented, to gather input and feedback.

“The plan encompasses the laws, rules and institutions needed to monitor and administer a transparent political funding mechanism in this country.

“Any improvements and updates in the laws pertaining to political funding will be presented in the Dewan Rakyat after proposals by the JKNMPP are scrutinised,” said Low, who is in charge of integrity and human rights.

He said this in a written reply to Nga Kor Ming (DAP-Taiping) who had asked the prime minister to specify the steps taken by the Government to control political funding issues in the country, and when a new law to regulate it would be presented in Parliament.

Low’s revelation today comes a day after he said that Putrajaya was mulling banning government-linked companies and those who would benefit from public contracts from making political donations.

He also said the National Committee on Political Funding might recommend that the ban include private donations from abroad, even if they come from Malaysians living in foreign countries.
