Alonso: McLaren still moving in the right direction (VIDEO)
LONDON, June 23 — McLaren-Honda drivers Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso spoke about their hopes for their Formula One car this season and next, as they attended the opening of a new sponsor’s store in central London yesterday.
Both turned up at the event in McLaren supercars. Alonso has 18 points in the championship so far with a fifth place his best result. Button has just five points with a ninth place being his best.
The team is seventh in the constructors’ standings.
“We are definitely moving in the right direction,” said two-times world champion Alonso. “There is still a long way to go for us because we want to win, we want to be world champions and we are not in that position yet but definitely we are getting closer. I think it is an important season for us and hopefully next year we can make the last step and fight for the championship.”
“I am always excited about the future,” said the 2009 world champion Button. “But the important thing is to keep your feet on the ground, enjoy the moment, work hard which is exactly what we are doing to develop the car and then the good times come to you. So it is all about the hard work that we do at this moment in time.”
Next Formula One race in the calendar is the Austrian Grand Prix on July 3. ― Reuters
