Two die in 16 vehicle pile-up on N-S highway
KUALA LUMPUR: A woman and a toddler were killed, a man was seriously hurt and four others slightly hurt in a 16-vehicle pileup on the North-South Expressway near Tanjung Malim (southbound) this morning.
In the 9.30am incident, Nurul Syazeila Iryani Suhaimi, 28, and daughter Hanna Humaira Mohd Hasnun, 18 months were killed.
Her husband Mohd Hasnun Ramli, 29, was seriously injured while four others sustained minor injuries at Km406.
Hulu Selangor Police Chief Supt R Supramaniam said the trio were cruising in the middle lane when an oil palm fruit-laden trailer lorry from the right lane collided with their car.
He said their car, driven by Mohd Hasnun, was sandwiched as another trailer lorry was travelling on the left lane and Nurul Syazeila Iryani and Hanna Humaira were killed instantly.
“Other vehicles failed to avoid the three stricken vehicles resulting in a multiple mishap, involving a total of four trailer lorries, two vans and 10 cars,” he said when contacted.
To a question, he said the cause of the accident was still being investigated and the driver of the first trailer lorry had been detained for investigation and a urine test.
He said the victims were sent to the Kuala Kubu Bharu Hospital.
Meanwhile, Kuala Kubu Bharu Fire and Rescue Department chief Kamil Hamadan said the other four slightly injured victims were sent to the Sungai Buloh Hospital for treatment.
