Ismail Sabri touts 12,000 ‘real’ signatories in declaration backing Najib

The rural and regional development minister took a swipe at Najib’s critics who earlier this year initiated a Citizens’ Declaration seeking the resignation of the prime minister.

“Datuk Seri, today the Kemas members will send their signatures to support your leadership and the government. We have collected 12,000 signatures out of 18,000 members and will continue our effort,” Ismail said in his speech at a Kemas event here in which Najib was present.

“For your information, our signatures are original. It is the members’ own signatures with IC, unlike the computer printed version from Citizen’s Declaration,” he added.

The Citizens’ Declaration is a signature drive spearheaded by a group calling itself Save Malaysia, frontlined by retired prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Save Malaysia claimed to have collected 1.2 million signatures, which they intended to submit to the Conference of Rulers, the collective assembly of the country’s Malay monarchs, to pressure for Najib’s ouster.

Last month however, a self-professed IT freelancer Azharuddin Othman, 30, told a news conference that signatures were obtained from the national voter database in his possession, which he claimed to have sold for RM5,000.
