Training lifeline for Hafifi
PUTRAJAYA, June 2 — The National Sports Institute (NSI) explained the Malaysian Weightlifting Federation (MWF) hopes to send weightlifter Mohd Hafifi Mansor for two months training to Foshan, China was an unplanned for proposal.
Mailsport reported yesterday Hafifi was both disappointed and frustrated with the rejection of the training stint by NSI.
MWF secretary, Pang Siew Huat said their request to send Hafifi for training was to prepare for the Olympics, but with a cash strapped budget, the NSI had no choice but to reject Hafifi’s proposed trip to China.
Podium Programme director, Tim Newenham in his reply to the Mailsport report, said the NSI are committed to providing the best preparation for their top athletes under the Podium programme.
“We supported the training proposal for Hafifi that was submitted by MWF.
“However, even though the initial plan for a two month stint in China was unexpected and thereafter rejected, we have been able to procure a budget for two weeks training instead,” he said.
Newenham said he would be happy to meet with the MWF’s secretary to discuss and better understand the reasons for such a last minute request.
