Karpal’s family appeals to set aside sedition conviction

lawPETALING JAYA: The family of the late DAP stalwart Karpal Singh has filed an appeal at the Federal Court to set aside his sedition conviction, reported Malaysiakini today.

Puchong MP and Karpal’s second son Gobind Singh Deo said the appeal was vital for the family to clear Karpal’s name.

Gobind said Karpal was merely stating his legal opinion pertaining to the 2009 Perak constitutional crisis, which cannot be an offence.

“To us, he has therefore committed no crime. So we must appeal to the Federal Court. The fight must go on.

“We have filed to set aside the conviction and sentence today,” Gobind was quoted saying.

On May 30, the Court of Appeal upheld Karpal’s sedition conviction over his comments on the 2009 Perak constitutional crisis, but reduced the fine from RM4,000 to RM1,800.

Karpal had told a press conference that the late Perak sultan’s decision to remove then Pakatan Rakyat menteri besar (Nizar Jamaluddin) could be challenged in court.

The former Bukit Gelugor MP was killed in a road accident in April 2014, about a month after he was convicted of sedition by the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

Today is the last day for Karpal’s family to file the appeal – their last chance to set aside the conviction.
