Najib ‘horrified’ by Orlando shooting
KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 ― Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak expressed sympathy today for victims of the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, that killed at least 50 people.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry also “strongly” condemned the massacre, which had injured another 53 people, and said in a separate statement that early reports indicated no Malaysian casualties.
“Horrified by Orlando shootings. Our prayers are with families & friends of the victims. Islam abhors killing of innocent people,” Najib tweeted from his @NajibRazak Twitter account.
Najib’s statement came after some Malaysians expressed approval on Facebook of the killings as they called the victims “sinners”.
“The government of Malaysia extends its condolences to the government and people of the United States of America, and particularly to the families of the victims,” said Malaysia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry.
Singaporean leaders earlier today expressed condolences over the massacre that was the deadliest mass shooting in American history.
A man armed with an assault rifle, identified by police as Omar Mateen, shot dead 50 people at Pulse nightclub in Orlando yesterday. President Barack Obama has described the incident as an act of terror and hate.
International newswire Reuters reported that the 29-year-old suspect, whom the police killed, was a Florida resident and US citizen born to immigrants from Afghanistan.
