PETALING JAYA: Here’s something you don’t see every day – an ostrich sprinting along the Federal Highway.

According to eyewitnesses, the ostrich was spotted on the side of the highway that is heading towards Kuala Lumpur at around 3pm today.

Some motorists also claimed several motorcyclists decided to move from the motorcycle lane and began riding beside the ostrich.

The Malay Mail Online meanwhile quoted BFM producer Jeff Sandhu as saying he saw the giant flightless bird sprinting from Jalan Universiti in Petaling Jaya and onto the highway, heading towards KL, at about 3.30pm.

“From the Universiti Malaya bus stop, it was running on that road then it merged onto the Federal Highway and it was on the fast lane, passing Bangsar South, RTM, it just kept running.

“It started out on the slow lane then it went to the emergency lane. Then on the emergency lane it overtook a car and ran across to the fast lane. It was just switching lanes here and there,” he was reported as saying.

While the incident left many scratching their heads as to where the big bird came from, a 35-second video of it amused many, including fellow motorists who witnessed the episode.

The video, which was shared on Hitz.fm’s Facebook and Twitter accounts have since garnered over 9,300 shares and 131,000 views on Facebook.

A Steven Tan tweeted: “What? Ostrich spotted at Federal Highway… or is it actually The Roadrunner?,” he said, alluding to the popular cartoon character.

Other netizens expressed concern over the well-being of the flightless bird.

A certain Aismizubouken tweeted “I hope the Ostrich is safe. The highway is full of cars speeding. I’m really worried for the ostrich’s safety.”

Car Magazine Malaysia also urged motorists to drive carefully in twitter. “Watch out people. Don’t hit the roadrunner down!”

One Facebook user, Yusrizal Ome, also pointed out that the ostrich had better road etiquette compared to other road users.

“Even the ostrich knows not to use the emergency lane when in a hurry.”
