ENRICHED BY RM2.6BIL, CAN NAJIB ‘BUY UP’ PEKAN? I WILL WIN BY 40K VOTES – NAJIB WARNS FOES AGAINST OUSTING HIM IN HOME SEAT
PEKAN – Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has set a target to win his Pekan parliamentary seat in the next general election with a majority vote of 40,000.
His target of a huge majority, he said, is to show his detractors that Pekan will remain his “fortress”.
“Make this (40,000 votes) a target because it can give a clear answer to them (his critics) that they can do whatever they want.
“But Pekan will remain a fortress under my leadership,” the Prime Minister said this in his winding-up speech at the Umno division meeting here yesterday.
Najib said that Pekan Umno division was special because its chief is also the Prime Minister.
“If you want to reap the benefits, you have to take care of the tree. Then its fruit will fall right onto Pekan. I will do what I can as MP and Prime Minister because I believe that in politics, one must always take care of his base. If you are all with me, I will not retreat.
“I am not afraid of anyone. Am I supposed to fear a 92-year-old man?,” he said, referring to his staunchest critic Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Najib said as Finance Minister, he would strive to do more for development programmes in the rural areas despite the difficult economic situation.
“The rural areas are the life and death of Umno politics. It is the place where all our diehard supporters are,” he added.
He reminded them of the 1999 general election where he won his Pekan seat by a slim majority of 241 votes.
This was why it was vital that unity and loyalty to the party be maintained at all times, Najib added.
“It was a nightmare in Pekan. There were many factors, including internal issues that had contributed to my near loss,” he said.
In the last general election in 2013, he won with a majority of 35,613 votes. He polled 51,278 while Mohd Fariz Abd Talib of PKR garnered 15,665 votes.
Najib also challenged his detractors to challenge him.
“If you are not happy with me, then bring it on. I have my own army. But don’t betray the party to the point of forming a new party,” he said, referring to Dr Mahathir’s move to form Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.
Najib also advised Barisan Nasional and Umno members to maintain their political unity.
He reminded them that during his National Day speech, he spoke about how Malaysians of all races came together as one to support the country’s badminton players in the Rio Olympics, such as Datuk Lee Chong Wei.
“Even though he didn’t win the gold medal, his match provided us with the awareness that if we stay together and practice the spirit of unity, our country will become strong and successful,” he said at an earlier speech during the opening of the division meeting. – ANN
