If Dr M can ‘embrace’ Anwar, why can’t Umno change? MCA man asks
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 ― An MCA leader told ally party Umno today to change and to stop putting down the non-Malays, highlighting the momentous meeting between arch enemies Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
MCA religious harmony bureau chairman Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker said scare tactics like saying that “the Chinese are coming; the Malays are under siege; our Islamic faith is being threatened, etc etc” are no longer effective as Malays today are “stronger”.
“If Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad can be Machiavellian enough to re-embrace Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in a game changer, why not Umno?
“Gone were the days whereby Umno can step or pick on the minorities to display their strength and as a clarion call for Malays or Muslims to unite or stay together against the others,” Ti said in a statement.
Former prime minister Dr Mahathir and his ex-deputy Anwar met in court last Monday, even shaking hands, for the first time since the former sacked the latter from the Cabinet 18 years ago.
Ti said Malays now have increased confidence and self-esteem that allows them to think outside of their old political or feudalistic mindset.
“Gone were the dependency syndrome or the ‘jiwa hamba’ [slave spirit] or ‘Takkan Melayu hilang’ [No way will the Malays disappear] political psyche of the past,” he said.
He also said issues like non-Muslims’ usage of the Arabic term “Allah” for God, criticism of vernacular schools and questioning non-Muslims’ freedom of worship, have failed to unite the Malay-Muslims.
“Many Malays no longer fall for these political games of victimisation and some have openly disagreed with these racial religious games.
“Instead of producing the desired result of uniting the Malays, these issues were proven to be counter productive and had inadvertently united the Christians, the Indians, the Chinese etc into taking an ‘anti Umno’ stand blaming on Umno for their failure to show tolerance, protect or defend the years of practices or freedom that have been enjoyed by the minorities,” said Ti.
The significant meeting between Dr Mahathir and Anwar came after the former set up a Bumiputera-centric party, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, amid speculation that the next general election may be held next year.
The Home Ministry announced today that Parti Pribumi’s registration has been provisionally approved.
