British footwear brand unveils Anna Sui collaboration

Visions of Tahiti, the largest island of French Polynesia, evokes a sense of escape with crystal clear blue waters and white sand beaches.

If you’re not heading there anytime soon, no worries, British footwear brand Fitflop is bringing Tahiti to your feet.

The newest range of Fitflop’s ballerinas and toe-thong sandals emit a fun vibe and are inspired by the colours and spirit of this dreamy island.

Created in 2007 by Canadian-born Marcia Kilgore – a beauty industry entrepreneur – in collaboration with British biomechanists Dr David Cook and Darren James, Fitflop is known for its ergonomic sandals, shoes and boots.

The brand’s third collaboration with American fashion designer Anna Sui sees a playful and relaxed range of footwear inspired by her Spring/Summer 2016 runway collection.

Sui has lent the Tahitian pineapple print from her Spring/Summer 2016 collection to reinterpret Fitflop’s low-cut, comfy and summery ballerinas and toe-thong sandals.

“My initial fantasies of Tahiti were inspired by the paintings of Paul Gauguin, and Mutiny on the Bounty! I also had a personal connection. As a child I looked forward to Christmas gift boxes from Tahiti, containing small objects made with mother-of-pearl or sea shells,” Sui says of her recent Summer vacation.

“The entire culture of Polynesia is singularly concerned with nature: the clarity of the water, the colour of the sand and sky, the flowers, the landscapes. All inspiring. You can see the stimulus in my palette for the Spring 2016 collection: seafoam green, aqua mist, teal lagoon, hibiscus red, and pineapple yellow,” she adds.

Sui is known for vintage-inspired prints, and with her Spring 2016 collection she let her imagine-go-wild with playful aloha souvenir patterns of hibiscus flowers, tropical butterflies, exotic birds, palm trees, star fish, surfers and tattoo print mesh.

The Spring/Summer 2016 Anna Sui for Fitflop Latticed Leather Superballerinas in a soft scalloped-edge laser-cut design come in navy and white, and features the pineapple print on the insole. They are designed with the brand’s cushioned, sneaker-comfy SupercomFF midsole technology.

The pretty latticed design around the edges of these ballerinas mirror the cut-outs design seen on Sui’s Spring 2016 runway collection, and was inspired by the Henri Matisse cut-outs at the Museum of Modern Art according to Sui.

Instead of a pineapple print on the insole, the Spring/Summer 2016 Anna Sui for Fitflop Pineapple Print Superballerinas sees the pineapple print prominently visible on the vamp or upper part of the shoe, and these ballerinas come in midnight navy and aqua.

For sandal lovers, the Spring/Summer 2016 Anna Sui for Fitflop toe-thong sandals come in an aqua pineapple print with a white insole or a navy pineapple print with a black insole.

While these adorable ballerinas look great for casual wear, pairing them with a pencil skirt and a chic jacket or a fitted midi dress will lend a sense of fun and whimsy to your office attire, along with comfort.

So, who knew pineapples could look so cool on your feet!
