Gifts made with that personal touch
If it’s really the thought that counts, it’s time to think creative – celebrate your loved ones this yuletide with a personalised gift that spells “handmade with love”. Don’t know where to start? Here are some fun ideas for inspiration.
Doll-a-doodle
Time required: 1½ hours
Stuff you’ll need: Cloth, needle, thread, doll’s stuffing and your child’s doodle
Give your tiny tot something to grin about from ear to ear – bring one of his favourite animal doodles to life by reimagining it into a hand-sewn doll! Remember to resist the urge to “correct” any irregularities. The project is meant to showcase his creativity, not yours.
Candid crochet
Time required: One hour
Stuff you’ll need: Yarn and crochet hook
Crochet wearables are always welcome in the land of gifts, especially when they are meant for making pint-sized cuties even cuter than they already are. Whip up a stack of character beanies for the friend who enjoys getting her newborn to pose for themed photo shoots a la Japanese mom @ayumiichi on Instagram, who has garnered quite a following for documenting her sleeping twins’ kawaii dress-up adventures.
Tea for two
Time required: 20 minutes
Stuff you’ll need: Plain cotton tea towel, acrylic paint and fruit halves
Lemons, apples, pears – cut one in half and go on a stamping storm to design your own range of retro-chic tea towels, much like how you played with potato prints as a child.
Fuzzy felt
Time required: 40 minutes
Stuff you’ll need: Wool roving, felting needle and sweater
Elbow patches are oh-so-chic and if you can personalise your own without the hassle of operating a sewing machine, won’t that be the coolest? Grab yourself a needle-felting kit and imprint a fuzzy woodland creature onto a cuddly sweater – the perfect present for a bestie that is guaranteed to make heads turn.
Spa in a Jar
Time required: 10 minutes
Stuff you’ll need: Peppermint tea bag, Epsom salts, baby wipes, food colouring and a glass jar
Know someone who has very few wants but needs a whole lot of pampering? Throw together a “spa in a jar” and make this peppermint foot soak the star ingredient.
Secret tip: add a drop of food colouring onto a baby wipe and swirl it around the bowl of Epsom salts to give it just a hint of colour.
