PROSPERITY OR DEATH – WHICH DO YOU WANT? VOTE FOR HARAPAN’S LUCKY RED, NOT BN’S FUNERAL BLUE – ‘SUPERMAN’ HEW TELLS CHINESE
Former DAP member Hew Kuan Yau, fondly known as ‘Superman’ has urged the local Chinese to support Pakatan Harapan instead of BN, citing Chinese funeral customs.
This, said the controversial figure, is partly due to the blue colour used by BN being similar to the colour of Chinese funeral lanterns.
“Only two coalitions will contest in the general election, the red representing Harapan, and the blue, representing BN,” he said at Pakatan Harapan’s fundraising dinner in Kluang last night.
“Red is lucky and symbolises courage for the Malays, and ‘ong’ (prosperity) for the Chinese.
“As for the blue colour, it means death, do you agree? This is the same blue colour in the lantern appearing at funerals.
“So, we will not vote for the colour of the lantern, we will vote for ‘ong‘,” he said.
“The Chinese must choose the red colour over the blue that represent death,” he said.
Hew, who had quit DAP over the South China Sea row, was the last speaker at the dinner.
Former prime minister and Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad was absent due to a bout of flu.
‘Reject green’
Taking a jab at PAS, Hew said Malaysians should forget about voting for the Islamic party even if they like the colour green.
“PAS is a fake opposition party. It is not a pure opposition party because under the leadership of its president Abdul Hadi Awang, PAS has become the ‘macai‘ (lackey) of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak,” he said.
“As Chinese, we should not cast any ballot for PAS,” he said.
Hew pledged to campaign for DAP Kluang parliamentarian Liew Chin Tong and Mengkibol state assemblyperson Tan Hong Ping in the next general election should the duo decide to defend their constituencies.
Expressing his gratitude to the duo, Hew said both Liew and Tan had assisted him when he was at one time detained in a Kulai lockup for allegedly insulting Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor.
Hew, notorious for his brash comments, had previously hit the spotlight for his remarks during the last Sarawak election, where he reportedly encouraged Chinese voters to electing DAP candidate Abdul Aziz Isa as it would lead to a “Melayu screw Melayu” situation.
Hew denied his remark smacked of racism, arguing that he would not have asked Sarawakians to vote for a Malay candidate if he was racist.
The fiasco led DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang to describe Hew’s comment as “vulgar and insensitive”, but denied it was racist.
Hew was the final speaker of the night, a position which is generally perceived to be given to the most important speaker at such events.
When asked about this, DAP Kluang parliamentarian Liew Chin Tong who was in charge of the event said Hew was invited because he has his own fans.
“He has his audience and he was invited by party members to come,” he explained.
“We need to gather all sort of resources so a change of government can happen, this is good.
“We need to mobilise everyone to join (the opposition), including the civil society and other talents,” he added.
On the matter of Hew’s oft-controversial remarks, Liew said Hew had been attempting to make adjustments to his speeches.
“I am of the view that he is making adjustments (to the way he addresses forums),” he stressed.
