SIGN OF HOW THE PEOPLE FEEL ABOUT BERSATU, DAP, AMANAH & PKR? DR M’S PORTRAIT FETCHES HIGHEST PRICE AT RM4,900, KIT SIANG & MAT SABU NEXT AT RM3,500 WHILE ANWAR AT RM3,000 EVEN WITH NURUL’S SIGNATURE
Five portraits of Pakatan Harapan’s big guns were sold at last night’s fundraising dinner for the opposition coalition for a grand total of RM16,700, with the painting of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad fetching the highest price at RM4,900.
The paintings of both DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu were each auctioned off for RM3,500, the second-highest price.
Pakatan Harapan de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim’s portrait, which bear the signatures of his eldest daughter and PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah, was sold for RM3,000.
The portrait of the late DAP president Karpal Singh, which bears the signature of his son and Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo, fetched RM1,800.
Mahathir’s painting was purchased by his die-hard supporter Parit Sulong Bersatu chief Che Zakaria Mohd Salleh (photo), who wanted the artwork for his party’s new premises.
“I began supporting Mahathir when I was still in school. I joined Umno in 1986 and exited the party later because of him,” he told Malaysiakini.
“This is the seventh piece of huge Mahathir paintings which I have collected so far. I put them in my office and house,” he said, adding that he also kept seven other portraits of Mahathir since he was made education minister.
“Mahathir is someone very special to me,” he stressed.
The auction, featuring portraits painted by local artist Chong Kean Foong on canvases measuring 20×30 inches, was part of the gimmick at the 138-table dinner held at the Che Luan Khor Temple, Kluang.
The event attracted a multi-ethnic range of Harapan supporters and component party members. The attendees were mainly DAP and Bersatu supporters clad in red shirts or outfits.
Besides raising funds for Harapan’s allies, DAP Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong said the dinner was meant to familiarise locals with the notion of cooperation between four parties under the Harapan umbrella.
“You can see the Harapan logo used as the backdrop of our stage, some 200 Harapan flags were put up nearby,” he said.
The organiser also erected a giant signboard featuring a map of Malaysia, which Liew hoped would help attendees immediately understand that the coalition was meant for all Malaysians.
In his speech, Liew, who is also Johor DAP chief vowed to retain his Kluang parliamentary seat. He also promised that DAP would retain its Mengkibol state seat and win the Mahkota state seat currently held by Umno in the coming general election.
Both Mengkibol and Mahkota are state seats under the semi-urban Kluang seat.
