WHEN IGP & AG ARE AS CORRUPT AS THE PM: AMANAH WANTS HIGH-LEVEL PANEL TO MONITOR TOP OFFICIALS

OPPOSITION party Amanah wants a special committee consisting of former judges and attorneys-general to be set up to monitor performance of top government officials in issues that affect the country.

Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub said the suggestion, still at proposal stage, will be to monitor those who held posts like attorney-general, inspector-general of police, ministers and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief.

He said this is to ensure those in power carry out their duty impartially in issues and scandals involving quasi-government institutions, such as 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), Tabung Haji and Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd (FGV).

“We want to give the opportunity to former government officials such as ex-judges, attorneys-general, and those who are experts in law who still have a high reputation to monitor these officials.

“Like the 1MDB issue, it’s not a foreign intervention as it involves public money that has been embezzled,” he said in a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

He said the proposal will be brought to Pakatan Harapan’s next presidential council meeting.

Last week, Pakatan Harapan announced that it would establish a 1MDB action committee, following the latest civil suit by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) to seize assets worth US$540 million (RM2.3 billion) acquired from funds siphoned off from 1MDB.

The opposition coalition will invite retired top civil servants, including those from Bank Negara, former diplomats and former Suhakam commissioners as well as former judges to join the committee.

Separately, Salahuddin also questioned the Sarawak government’s move to send a legal team to London to research details on the Malaysia Agreement 1963, which would help the state negotiate for devolution of federal powers.

“It’s not a good sign to Kuala Lumpur (Putrajaya) and I’m concerned that this move will invite foreign intervention,” he said, adding that Sarawak Barisan Nasional manipulated the issue at the last state elections. –
