HONG KONG IN SHOCK: SON OF DEPUTY EDUCATION MINISTER, 25, FALLS TO DEATH FROM 41ST-FLOOR CONDO
The 25-year-old son of Hong Kong’s deputy education minister fell to his death from a luxury apartment block in Yau Ma Tei on Thursday,
Paramedics and police were called to the Sorrento housing estate near Kowloon MTR station on Jordan Road following a report from a security guard shortly before noon.
The guard had found a man who had fallen onto the ninth-floor podium of an apartment block, a police spokeswoman said. The victim was taken unconscious to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei, where he was certified dead.
Initial investigations indicated the deceased was the son of Undersecretary for Education Christine Choi Yuk-lin, according to a government source.
“Initial investigations showed he tried to jump out of window from the living room but was stopped by the maid,” the source said. “He went to his bedroom and locked the door before he jumped out of window.”
It is understood that the deceased had suffered from depression.
According to police, no note was found at the scene. Initial investigations did not reveal any suspicious circumstances, according to the source.
Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung Yun-hung said he was saddened over the incident and expressed his condolences to Choi’s family.
Officers from the Yau Tsim police district are handling the case.
