Deadly Flood in India Leaves Hundreds Dead and Thousands Homeless
Recent flooding caused by torrential rains in the southern state of Kerala in India has left at least 324 people dead as of Saturday.
The death toll since the country’s monsoon season began in June has now reached over 930 people. According to local officials, most of those killed were reportedly due to landslides.

India Meteorological Department reported that the state had been hit with 37% more than usual rainfall during monsoon season because of a spell of low pressure over the region. The flooding has also resulted in 200,000 people losing their homes, BBC reports.

As more torrential rain and strong winds are expected over the weekend, rescuers are exerting all efforts to rescue thousands of people still stuck on trees or stranded on rooftops.

Nearly all of the state’s districts are currently on red alert for more heavy rains over the coming days.
In a series of tweets, Chief Minister of KeralaPinarayi Vijayan posted updates on what he considers as the worst flooding the state has seen in a century.

He added that over 314,000 people have now taken refuge to more than 2,000 emergency relief camps set up in the area.

In one village alone, at least 10,000 people remain stranded after all roads surrounding the area were submerged by water.
According to the Times of India, rescue attempts by boat have been extremely perilous due to the strong currents. The outage of mobile coverage in most places in the area greatly affects the rescue efforts.
Netizens have since been posting heartbreaking images and videos of the disaster on social media to spread awareness.
