PKR denies Batu Kitang seat proposer a bankrupt
KUCHING: PKR Batu Kitang candidate Voon Shiak Ni has denied claims that there were problems with her nomination yesterday.
“There was nothing wrong with our nomination papers and our proposer is not a bankrupt. There was some delay most probably because the two independent candidates were using the same logo, kunci (key).
“I seriously assert that I and my proposer were never called in by the returning officer for any queries at all,” said Voon in a Facebook posting.
She was responding to a claim by State DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen that Voon almost had her nomination disqualified. He had said this in defending the party’s decision to field a candidate for the Batu Kitang seat.
“PKR’s proposer was found to be a bankrupt. That’s why there was a delay in the announcement of the candidates. If that had happened, it would have given BN a walkover victory in the seat where past results had shown more support for DAP,” Chong is reported to have said.
At a press conference today, Voon’s campaign manager Simon Siah Sy Jen came to her defence, saying that he had personally done a bankruptcy check on the proposer, Narawi Palayan Miniandi, the night before nomination day.
“We urge Chong to check his facts before making accusations that have caused damage to the reputation of our proposer. This is defamation and Narawi reserves his right to take legal action if necessary.
“Furthermore, since the returning officer had accepted the nomination of our candidate, this is a non-issue,” he told reporters at the PKR operations centre here.
Narawi, who was present at the press conference, said he did not know why he was targeted by the DAP, but did not deny the possibility of pursuing legal action.
PKR and DAP have had a fallout over seat allocation and the allies are now contesting against each other in six seats.
Voon is facing the DAP’s 27-year-old candidate Abdul Aziz Isa, along with two independent candidates and one from the BN.
