MIRI: Eighteen persons comprising students, their family members and members of the public had their heads shaved at IBS College here Thursday and raised RM5,500 for Sarawak Children Cancer Society (SCCS).

It was the second satellite event held prior to the Go Bald 8.0 to be held on May 15.

IBS College principal Dr Anthony Hii said the satellite shave was a great success in creating awareness about childhood cancer among members of the public.

“This is the fifth year we are doing this, and we are delighted that the participation is very encouraging. Of course, our main aim is to raise money to assist the SCCS,” he said.

He said the college would continue to support their students to participate in worthy causes like donating RM50 each to have their heads shaved, adding that the college would top up whatever was the amount raised.

Meanwhile, SCCS president Jocelyn Hee urged more people to support the charity shave to help in creating awareness about childhood cancer.

“We are expecting over 100 people to go bald and we are working our best to urge more people to pledge fund to cover SCCS’ yearly expenses of RM1.5 million.”

SCCS currently operates two halfway homes – in Kuching and Miri – to provide accommodation for outstation children and their families receiving treatment at Sarawak General Hospital.

“For many cancer patients, especially children, hair loss following chemotherapy is one of the most daunting aspects of the treatment. Whilst this is the least of the effects of cancer treatment, it can be traumatic nonetheless. The act of going bald by members of the public shows our young patients that it’s OK to lose their hair as they walk the path towards recovery.

“Therefore, we need all the help both financially and physically so that we can continue to provide assistance to these patients and their families,” she said.

The main event for the eighth edition of Go Bald 2016 will be held on May 15 in Kuching (CityOne Megamall) and in Miri (Permaisuri Imperial City Mall), Sibu on May 22 at Delta Mall and in Bintulu, also on May 22, at Parkcity Everly Hotel.
